Many students experience stress. Excessive amounts of stress can lead students to become anxious, exhausted, or cease to function properly in the classroom or at home. This means that they do not learn properly and may have difficulty in social settings. It is very important to be able to recognize signs of stress in students in order to help them develop coping strategies to eliminate or reduce stress. Students who suffer high levels of stress can show some of the following signs:
Although many of these behaviors May appear to be indicators of other social and mental health issues for young people, some students may experience stress at home and outside school, and therefore not immediately obvious to teachers and school community members. This may contribute to poor ability to cope. These factors can include stressful personal family problems, such as financial and marital problems of parents, family separation, who live in single parent families, death in the family, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, and changes in family circumstances, such as were re-partnership of parents, relocation or loss of a friend.
